Campus Move-Out Cleanliness

The City of Champaign Public Works and Neighborhood Services Departments will be working together to keep the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus as clean and attractive as possible during the upcoming two weeks when students move out of their dwelling units (i.e. apartments, fraternities, sororities, houses, etc.).

The City has been very pleased with the appearance of campus during the move-in and move-out weeks for the past five years. The City appreciates the cooperation and additional efforts made by all involved. Going into the sixth year of the program, the City hopes to achieve positive results while monitoring the enforce exterior premise grounds Municipal Property Maintenance Code requirements during the May 2010 campus move- out period.

Procedures involved during move-in and move-out periods are as follows:

  • Property Maintenance Inspectors will be on campus daily to look for overflowing dumpsters and dumpsters that may have been emptied, but the overflow of trash has been left on the ground.
  • When inspectors find dumpsters that are overflowing, a notice will be posted on the property and mailed to the owner, giving them 48 hours to remove the overflow from the ground. This may require contracting for additional pickups by the hauling company as well as increasing the size and capacity of dumpsters.
  • If the trash on the ground remains after the 48-hour period, the City will remove the trash and bill the owner for the labor, dumping fees, and an additional $100 administrative fee.
  • When inspectors find dumpsters that have been emptied but have trash strewn around the dumpster, a 24-hour notice will be issued. If the trash remains after the 24-hour notice, the City will remove the trash and bill the owner for the labor, dumping fees, and an additional $100 administrative fee.

Hauling companies will remove the overflow when they empty the container for an additional fee, if contracted to do so.
