This morning at approximately 1:57 a.m., Champaign police officers responded to a fatal accident in which a van struck a pedestrian in the 1600 block of W. Springfield Avenue.
According to reports, a van struck a 46 y/o Champaign man who suddenly ran into the path of traffic. The driver, 76 y/o Larita Amacher of Champaign, was heading westbound in the left lane at the time of the accident. She reported that she observed a man running northbound into the street near 1608 W. Springfield. When she attempted to stop her vehicle, the man suddenly struck her windshield and fell in the roadway.
The pedestrian, who was conscious and breathing at the scene, was transported to Carle Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
No injuries were reported by Larita Amacher and no citations have been issued at this time.
Champaign police are currently investigating this accident.
