Champaign Police Thwart a Potential Assault

On September 18, 2010 at 1:35 a.m., officers with the Champaign Police Department’s Community Action Team (CAT) arrested two suspects in connection with a Hate Crime and an Aggravated Battery during a recent detail on campus.

While patrolling the campus area, officers proactively responded to an altercation in the 500 block of E. Green Street after observing five male subjects and a 21 y/o male victim involved in a verbal altercation. As the victim walked away, the subjects were beginning to follow the victim and the actions of the group provided the appearance that they were attempting to provoke a fight. This prompted officers to stop and question the subjects and victim. Upon further investigation of the incident, it was determined that two of the subjects were the primary instigators and had allegedly threatened the victim with bodily harm and made a comment in reference to his race. The victim also reported that one of the suspects aggressively grabbed his shorts. Due to the prompt response and proactive efforts of the officers, this altercation was quickly diffused and the victim left the scene unharmed.

Four suspects were detained after one fled the scene. One 18 y/o male was arrested for Possession of Cannabis, two 19 year-old males were arrested for a Hate Crime and Aggravated Assault, one 16 y/o juvenile was detained for a curfew violation but later released to the custody of a guardian.
