West Side Park Fire and Police Memorial Dedication Ceremony

“Their duty was to serve. Our duty is to remember.”

The West Side Park Fire and Police Memorial Dedication Ceremony was held on September 28 at 6:00 PM in West Side Park near the corner of Church St. and State St. with family members of fallen Champaign police officers and firefighters in attendance along with citizens, honored guests, City Council members, and members of the Fire and Police Memorial Committee.

A flag-raising ceremony and the National Anthem were provided by Champaign Fire Department Local 1260 Honor Guard, Champaign Police Department Honor Guard, and Aaron Romm on trumpet. Introductory remarks were provided by Ms. Angela Devaney followed by an Invocation by Pastor David Ashby. Ms. Mary Su Forsman, wife of Fire Chief Douglas Forsman, provided an historical account of the memorial. Ms. Connie Finney, wife of Police Chief R.T. Finney, shared her vision for the project and the work accomplished to this point.

Ms. Connie Finney, wife of Police Chief R.T. Finney, has provided vision and leadership to the completion of Phase One of the West Side Park Fire and Police Memorial.
