Police Respond to Aggravated Discharge of Firearm

On October 24, 2010 at approximately 2:40 a.m., Champaign Police responded to the Carle Hospital in reference to a shooting that occurred in the 700 block of S. Sixth Street.

Victim reports walking with a friend in the 700 Block of S. Sixth Street when two subjects, who were walking in front of them, turned around and asked if they had made a comment. When the victim indicated that he was not talking to the two males, they began to yell at him. As this was occurring, a blue Dodge Magnum style vehicle pulled up. A subject, later identified as Robert exited the vehicle. As he approached the victim, he lifted up his shirt and produced a handgun from the front of his pants. As the gun was pulled out, the weapon discharged and fell to the ground. The suspect then picked up the gun and pointed it at the 21 y/o victim. A tussle ensued and the gun discharged a few more times while the victim was being hit with it. After the final time the gun discharged, the suspect ran back to the vehicle and fled the scene. He was later arrested when he went to the Carle Hospital ER to be treated for a gunshot wound.

Twenty year old, Robert Earl of 404 S. Urbana, Urbana, IL was arrested for Unlawful Use of Weapons, Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm.

The victim was not shot during the incident. He did seek medical attention for injuries sustained during the altercation.
