One Arrest Made In Shots Fired Call (500 Block of Nathaniel Burch Drive)

Champaign police officers have arrested a suspect after responding to a shots fired call in the 500 block of Nathaniel Burch Drive.

Upon arrival officers received information that an armed subject fired a weapon from his residence and forced a female back into the home. Officer secured a perimeter around the residence and shut down traffic on Bradley Avenue between the 400 – 600 block.

The Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team responded to the incident to evacuate residents living nearby and to assist with apprehending the subject. The Mass Transit District provided a bus to provide temporary shelter for evacuated residents. Champaign police negotiators were also on scene and later made contact with the suspect by phone. The Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit was on standby to provide additional equipment as needed. The METRO Team SWAT commanders were also on scene to assist. .

While officers were evacuating nearby residents, a female exited the home unharmed and was interviewed by detectives. As a precautionary measure, medical teams were summoned to the scene. However, no one was injured during the incident.

At approximately 12:00 PM, the male subject contacted police and exited the residence without incident. He was taken into custody and arrested for Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Aggravated Assault. Champaign police obtained a search warrant for subject’s residence and recovered ammunition and a handgun.
