The City of Champaign Forestry Crew celebrated Arbor Day on April 27, 2012, with a couple of activities. In the morning, they held a tree-planting ceremony for a group of twenty 6-year olds from the Champaign Park District Busy Bee Day Camp. A Kwanzan cherry tree was planted at the southwest corner of Randolph and Hill as a replacement for a tree that had been removed earlier.
Later in the day, the arborists surprised retired Forestry Supervisor Bill Vander Weit with a ceremony at Eisner Park. The crew arranged for a plaque to be dedicated in his honor for his years of service and dedication to the City of Champaign Forestry program. The Champaign Park District assisted in placing this plaque next to a pond cypress that Bill had previously arranged to have planted in conjunction with the University Avenue Tree Walk.
