Suspect Arrested for Multiple Burglaries

Thirty-one year old Christopher D. Vaughn of Chicago has been arrested for his involvement in two motor vehicle burglaries reported to Champaign Police on July 31, 2012.

During the overnight hours of July 31st, Champaign Police received a total of six reports of burglaries to motor vehicles. Vehicle owners reported loose change, cash, an electronic device and a phone charger being stolen.

After obtaining a suspect description from one of the victim, at 3:43 a.m., officers made contact with Vaughn while he was walking in the 700 block of N. Harris Street. The victim positively identified the suspect and Mr. Vaughn was arrested for two burglaries that occurred in the 1200 block of Mimosa and the 900 block of W. Tremont.

Vehicle burglaries occur at all hours, day and night. Most are considered crimes of opportunity and most thieves steal what they see in plain view. Many vehicle burglaries can be prevented by following a few simple tips:

  • Don’t leave valuables in your car. If you must keep valuables in your car, remove them from plain site.
  • Lock all doors and close windows, even if you are gone for a brief time and when the vehicle is parked in the garage at a home or driveway.
  • Remember to activate your alarm or anti-theft device upon exiting the vehicle.
