Second Annual August Move Out/Move In Recycle and Reuse Event

The City of Champaign’s Neighborhood Services and Public Works Departments collaborated with local non-profit organizations and Campus Property Management, for a successful Second Annual August Move Out/Move In Recycle and Reuse Event on Monday, August 6, 2012. The goal was to collect reusable and recyclable items that would normally be discarded in or around dumpsters during this hectic rental turnover time in August. Thanks to the remarkable efforts put in by Recycling Intern Parfait Gasana, Recycling Coordinator Angela Adams and Environmental Inspector Leslie Mitchell for arranging and distributing information about the event.

As a result, electronics, clothes, shoes, kitchen accessories, furniture, food, and lots of other miscellaneous items that would have been discarded in the trash were collected. Volunteers from the YMCA Dump and Run, Eastern Illinois Food Bank, Court Services, and Habitat for Humanity helped collect items that were brought to the Second and Green Street parking lot donated by Campus Property Management. Press coverage from WCIA, WCID and the News Gazette were on hand to capture the success. Many students, renters, and property owners came by to express their gratitude for the City making this happen, and obtained information where they could continue to take items after the Monday event. Habitat ReStore reported they had a busy day with people bringing items in as a result of the information presented about the event. The August Move Out/Move In Recycle and Reuse Event demonstrates the City’s commitment to keep campus clean for students and businesses while promoting sustainability and recycling.
