The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that starting Monday, October 22, 2012, the Canadian National Illinois Central (CNIC) Railroad will begin work to replace the railroad crossing on Springfield Avenue, west of Duncan Road.
The crossing will be completely closed to all traffic while the work is completed. According to an IDOT news release, the railroad crossing and Springfield Avenue could be closed for seven to 10 days.
The work consists of removing the existing rough crossing and replacing with new ties, ballast, rail improvements, new concrete crossing surface, and a small amount of asphalt paving.
CNIC will install traffic control signage to detour all Springfield Avenue traffic to Illinois Route 47, Interstate 57, and Mattis Avenue. Motorists who regularly use Springfield Avenue are advised to follow the marked detour route or use alternate routes
