The 2012/2013 bulk rock salt contract has been finalized by the State’s Central Management Services. The City has purchased salt through the State’s Joint Purchasing Requisition program since 1992. This year, Morton Salt, Inc. will be the City’s new vendor under the program. Their price per ton of rock salt is $61.37 for the 2012/13 season. This is ten percent less than last season’s cost of $68.75 per ton!
For this coming season, the City requisitioned 2,500 tons of salt and budgeted $175,000 (estimating $70 per ton) for the 80 percent minimum delivery of 2,000 tons. Until this year, salt costs have risen steadily over the past years as this chart indicates:
