Metal conduits protect the fiber optic cables and are labeled for easy identification.

The Information Technologies Department (ITD) has been preparing for and managing the installation of UC2B fiber optic cables into all City facilities since early this year. This included a great deal of prep work to plan the routes and install metal conduits to protect the fiber optic cables as they run through each facility. Recently UC2B installed fiber into the City Building, all six Fire Stations, the Hill Street Parking Deck, and both City of Champaign Township Offices. Fiber should be installed at the Police Department, Public Works, the Parking Office, and both Libraries in the weeks ahead. The fiber optic cables are not yet operational, but should be completed by UC2B early next year. Shortly thereafter, the City’s new high-speed fiber optic computer network will enable connectivity between City facilities at speeds up to 10 GB/second.
