This project was awarded at the July 5 City Council meeting and consists of rehabilitating various sanitary sewers and appurtenances located throughout the City. It includes a total of approximately 800 lineal feet of new sanitary sewer installed by Horizontal Directional Drilling in the south 500 block of Lynn Street and “upsizing” approximately 280 lineal feet of existing sanitary sewer from 6-inch diameter to 8-inch diameter sewer by Pipe Bursting in the south 500 block of Elm Street. Adjusting manhole elevations in the west 700 block of Washington Street to improve street drainage in that block is also part of the project as well as any unexpected, but necessary, repairs to the City’s sanitary sewer system for a one-year period following award of the contract. Directional drilling and pipe bursting are used in sewer construction to reduce the amount of surface disruption. Trenching and open cut is usually only about 10% of traditional methods of sewer construction. Cross Construction is the contractor for the project at a total a cost of $345,753.
New alley approach at east end of alley between Elm Street and Lynn Street
Directional drilling was finished at all locations and three new manholes installed. However, technical difficulties with the drill locating equipment led to excavation at several locations where the elevation of the sewer was not correct. At least one more line must also be redone. This problem has extended the normal amount of time and work necessary to directional drill a project of this size. Some restoration work has been completed after corrective measures were done in the alley between Elm Street and Lynn Street. Landscaping remains to be completed at all locations.
