IDOT Windsor and I-57 Bridge Project Important Construction Dates

O’Neil Brothers, IDOT’s contractor that will replace the Windsor Road bridge over Interstate 57, has identified some important dates in their upcoming construction schedule for Stage 1 work that will impact the traveling public. The key dates and associated construction activities are as follows:

April 1, 2013
Barrier placement on Windsor Road and on Interstate 57 for Stage 1 construction work. Windsor Road will be reduced to one traffic lane with temporary signals for the duration of the project until November 1st.

April 9 & 10
From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., northbound and southbound Interstate 57 will be closed to all traffic. All Interstate 57 traffic will follow a marked detour route using Monticello Road, U.S. Route 45 (Neil St.), IL Route 10 (Springfield Ave.), Mattis Avenue, and Church St./University Ave. This closure is necessary for Stage 1 demolition work. Severe weather may impact these dates.

May 14, 15, & 16
From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. northbound and southbound Interstate 57 will be closed to all traffic. This closure is necessary for the placement of Stage 1 structural steel. Severe weather may impact these dates.

July/August
Switchover to Stage 2 construction. Specific Interstate 57 closure dates will be announced when the time approaches.

IDOT’s project will replace the existing narrow two-lane bridge with a wider bridge that carries two twelve foot traffic lanes, two six-foot bike lanes, and two five-foot sidewalks with protective pedestrian fencing on both sides of the new bridge. The bridge will be constructed in two halves, which allows Windsor Road to remain open to traffic throughout the project. Temporary traffic signals will be used to allow one-direction of traffic at a time through the work zone. IDOT’s construction contract calls for a start date of April 1, 2013, and a final completion date of November 1, 2013.
