Fire Responds to Burn Victim

On Sunday, June 16, 2013 the Fire Department responded to a residence in Southwest Champaign for a burn victim. The situation found should be a note of caution for everyone. A female resident was popping some popcorn in her microwave oven. She had placed the popcorn in a ceramic bowl along with a small amount of cooking oil. When the popping ceased, she opened the microwave door and the ceramic bowl exploded, sending the very hot bowl pieces, popcorn and oil onto her face and upper body. Thankfully, her injuries are not life threatening, but they are very painful. The note of caution is clearly that not all glass and ceramic containers are safe for use in a microwave oven. When in doubt, find a container that states that it is safe for the intended use.
