Champaign City Council Accepting Applications to Fill District 1 Vacancy

The City of Champaign is now accepting applications from residents interested in filling the vacant District 1 Council office. Applications are available on the City’s website (ci.champaign.il.us/city-council) and in the Mayor’s Office (Champaign City Building, 102 N. Neil St.). The deadline to submit completed applications to the Mayor’s Office is 12 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2015.

Qualified applicants for the District 1 Council vacancy must:

  • Be a resident of District 1
  • Reside in Champaign for at least one year preceding the appointment
  • Be a qualified elector
  • Be current in payments of taxes or debts due the City of Champaign
  • Not have been convicted of infamous and certain other crimes

The City Council will review the applications then interview qualified applicants during a Study Session meeting on June 9. The Council is expected to appoint a resident to fill the vacancy at their regular Council Meeting on June 16. The appointed Council Member would fill the District 1 office seat until the Consolidated Election in 2017.

The Council office vacancy was created May 5, 2015, when Council member Will Kyles resigned from his District 1 office and was sworn into an At-Large Council office. By state statute, the City Council is required to fill the vacancy within 60 days – or before July 4, 2015.
