The Champaign Fire Department responded to a report of a working fire at 1603 Sheffield Road on July 23, 2015 at 3:47 a.m. Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames emanating from the roof and garage of the structure. Also upon arrival, fire crews found the occupants outside the structure awoken by the smoke detectors. Fire crews deployed multiple hand lines into the structure in an attempt to extinguish the fire. Fire crews deployed a single-hand line to protect the adjacent property. Fire crews extinguished the fire and began salvage and overhaul operations. The Champaign Fire Department reminds residents to always have working smoke detectors.
