The Champaign Fire Department responded to the report of a field on fire east of the 2500 block of Applewood Road. Upon arrival, fire crews found a rapidly spreading field fire, encroaching on nearby residences. Fire crews deployed hand lines in an attempt to get the fire under control and protect the homes. Additional resources were called in from Willard Crash-Rescue and Bondville Fire Department. Crews encountered changing wind conditions with wind gusts reaching 25 mph, that made extinguishment difficult. Heavy smoke conditions forced the closure of Windsor Road while crews worked. Crews had the fire under control around 1:15 pm.
