On March 30, the Planning and Development Department met with a focus group of the development community assembled by the offices of Meyer Capel in Champaign. The Department presented the final proposed standards for the Zoning Ordinance amendments known as “Zone Champaign.” These amendments will update the standards used to regulate development in Downtown, Midtown, Campustown and the student neighborhoods near campus. New standards will be proposed for the height of buildings as well as basic design standards which will provide for a more cohesive and attractive design and orientation of new buildings. This meeting represented the third of three input sessions. Participants included local developers, architects and investors for development in these areas. With some comments, the group extended support for the changes, which will be presented publicly in June and considered by Plan Commission and City Council in July.
