Neighborhood Services staff members attended the Attorney General (AG) Grant Bus Tour on May 12. The AG grant was awarded by the State’s Attorney General’s Office to revitalize neighborhoods strongly impacted by foreclosure. Those revitalization efforts include rehabilitation and rebuilding of homes, as well as credit and foreclosure mitigation counseling. In our community the AG team is headed by Habitat for Humanity in partnership with the Cities of Champaign and Urbana, Busey Bank, Hickory Point Bank, Navicor Credit Counseling, the U of I Planning Department, and the U of I Law Clinic. The grant is for $2M leveraged to a total project cost of over $3.5M of investment in our communities. The bus tour was organized for participants to both view completed AG properties and to understand the impact of the AG grant in the target areas. There are eight AG properties in the City of Champaign: three in Garden Hills, three in North Champaign along the Bradley Corridor, and two in the Douglass Park area. Participants exited the bus to view a completed property on Paula Drive and were able to view the exterior of many other properties. The AG grant has allowed Habitat to purchase a total of 18 properties for rehabilitation and/or reconstruction and resale.
