Apartment Building Fire – 2411 N. Neil Street

The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 2411 N. Neil Street, May 30, 2016, at 4:54 p.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews reported heavy smoke coming from the rear of the structure. Rescue and suppression efforts began immediately.

Sixteen (16) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately thirty-five (35) emergency response personnel responded to the call from Champaign Fire, Urbana Fire, and Presence PRO Ambulance. Once on scene, fire crews found the rear of the apartment building fully involved. Crews quickly began searches of the building and suppression efforts. The fire was brought under control at 8:19 p.m. Fire crews will remain on the scene throughout the night to extinguish any remaining spot fires.

One occupant was rescued from a second floor balcony by fire crews. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported. The Red Cross, Emergency Services Support Team, and Town Center Apartments management worked to relocate the residents. The total damage estimate is currently unavailable. The origin and cause is currently undetermined as the fire investigation continues.

The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan.
