The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 203 E. Washington Street, May 30, 2016, at 6:27 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews reported smoke coming from the front of the structure with one occupant on the roof. Rescue efforts began immediately.
Twelve (12) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately twenty-six (26) emergency response personnel responded to the call from Champaign Fire and Arrow Ambulance. The fire was discovered by a Champaign Police Officer that was patrolling the neighborhood. Once on scene, fire crews threw ladders to the roof to rescue the occupant. Crews entered the residence, found a small fire, and extinguished it using fire extinguishers. The fire was brought under control at 6:35 a.m. One occupant was transported from the scene for medical evaluation. There were no firefighter injuries reported. Total damage is estimated at $10,000 structure and contents. The origin and cause is currently undetermined as the fire investigation continues.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan.
