The Champaign Fire Department has been awarded $183,478 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Assistance to Firefighters Grant for technical rescue training. This grant has a City match of $18,347 for a total of $201,825 for continued training.
In January 2016, the Champaign Fire Department applied for the FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. This grant allows additional members of the fire department to be trained in these high-risk, low-frequency incidents. The Firefighters will be attending the following courses through the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute:
- Rope Rescue Operations (40 Hour Course)
- Rope Rescue Technician (80 Hour Course)
- Vehicle Machinery Technician (40 Hour Course)
- Confined Space Rescue Operations (40 Hour Course)
- Confined Space Rescue Technician (40 Hour Course)
These courses provide the training necessary for incidents such as high- and low-angle rescues, advanced heavy vehicle extrications, and rescues from areas having limited or restricted means of entry or exit.
“Continued training is paramount to the safety of our first responders and those we serve in our great community,” said Gary Ludwig, Champaign’s Fire Chief. “This grant will help us further meet our mission of delivering outstanding service to our citizens, students, and visitors.”
