On July 30th, Police K-9 Officer, Kristina Haugen, and her dog “Solo”, conducted a K-9 demonstration for youth at the Orpheum Children’s Museum’s Zoology Camp. Haugen discussed the importance of having K-9 dogs in law enforcement and Solo’s role with solving crimes.

Sixteen area youth attended and graduated from the Police Department’s Basic Youth Police Academy and 8 youth attended and graduated from the Advanced Academy during the summer of 2012. The students engaged in obstacle courses, crime scene analysis, scenario reenactment and classroom instruction with School Resource Officers and volunteers. Graduates received certificates of completion.
Champaign Police Lieutenant Brad Yohnka retired on July 12, 2012 after 25 ½ years of service to the Police Department. Retired Lieutenant Yohnka took a day off and started in his new position as the Customer Service Representative for the City’s Public Works Department on July 16.
