Mr. Rivers served on the Champaign Police Department for 25 years. He was a patrolman from 1935 to 1958. In May 1958, Mr. Rivers was promoted to sergeant and served in that capacity until his retirement on August 1, 1960. He was the first African American to serve as a Police Officer in Champaign and at the time of his death, November 12, 1989, was the only African American to achieve the rank of Sergeant. |

Mr. Somers was a City of Champaign Justice of the Peace and Republican precinct committeeman for northeast Champaign. He was elected Champaign County Justice of the Peace for the Champaign District in 1961, which made him the first African American elected official in Champaign County. |
