2001-011 Main Street – between Chestnut Street and Neil Street 1/16/2001 Paul Slovikoski requested designation because the band has its roots in the City of Champaign.
2001-012 Country Fair Drive – between Bradley Avenue and Springer Drive 1/16/2001 Tim Harrington requested designation due to the part that Mr. Lienhart played in the development and management of Mattis Commercial Park from its inception in the mid-80’s to his retirement
2001-013 Alley located between Church and Hill Streets – between Elm Street and Neil Street 1/16/2001 William Sproat requested designation because in the first half of the 20th century, the parsonages for three churches were located on W. Hill St. According to tradition, the alley behind 2 of the 3 manses informally was called “Doxology Lane” because that is what the 3 pastors sang as they walked down the alley together on Sunday mornings.
2001-044 Sangamon Drive – between Crescent and Kenwood 3/6/2001 Morgan Powell requested designation to commemorate the dedication and leadership of Mr. Toalson to his community.
2001-045 Bloomington Road – between State Street and Hagan Street 3/6/2001 American Legion Post 24 requested designation to provide a memorial to all veterans; to provide a landmark to help visitors find their club; to provide a source of pride for members of the American Legion and VFW.
2001-106 Windsor Road – between Mattis and Duncan 5/15/2001 Stuart Meacham requested designation to honor Ms. Driscoll’s commitment to excellence. She established the “Determined to Win” Foundation.
2001-276 Edgebrook Drive – between Hagan and Edgebrook Estates Mobile Home Park 11/20/2001 James Hull requested designation to recognize those who fought in foreign wars and remember “their sacrifice and the price they gave to ensure our country’s freedom.”
2002-038 Windsor Road – between Neil Street and Prospect Avenue 2/19/2002 Stuart Meacham requested designation to recognize Mr. Turpin for being the “Voice of the Fighting Illini”; for his service at the WDWS radio station as general manager and talk show host.
2002-050 Park Avenue – between State Street and Randolph Street 3/5/2002 The Park District requested designation because Mr. Ebert, a famous film critic who is a former resident and U of I alumni, has been committed to the Overlooked Film Festival at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign; his involvement in the community; and his dedication to the Virginia Theatre’s renovation.
2002-220 Fourth Street – between Kirby Avenue and Peabody Drive 8/20/2002 Mr. Eddleman’s oldest daughter requested designation to recognize him for his athletic accomplishments at the U of I.
2004-220 Fourth Street – between Springfield Avenue and University Avenue 8/3/2004 The Friends of Burnham Committee and the Julia F. Burnham Alumni Association requested designation to acknowledge the contributions made by Burnham Hospital to the health and wellness of the City of Champaign.
2004-221 Paula Drive – between Mattis Avenue and McKinley Avenue 8/17/2004 Councilmember Vic McIntosh requested designation to acknowledge the countless contributions Ms. Mank made to the community as both a dedicated citizen and long-standing Council Member.
2005-027 First Street – between Kirby Avenue and St. Mary’s Road 2/1/2005 Mayor Schweighart requested designation to acknowledge the contribution that Mr. Henson made to U of I basketball. He coached for 21 seasons, and his contributions included 413 wins at the U of I and a Final Four appearance in 1988-89.
2005-063 First Street – between University Avenue and Park Avenue 3/1/2005 Officer Dodsworth was killed in the line of duty while serving the City of Champaign Police Department.
2005-064 University Avenue – between Chestnut Street and First Street 3/1/2005 Officer Tatman was killed in the line of duty while serving the City of Champaign Police Department.
2005-065 Kenwood Road – between Springfield Avenue and John Street 3/1/2005 Councilmember Tom Bruno requested designation to acknowledge the contribution and sacrifice that Cpl Moore made to his country while serving with the Marines in Iraq.
2006-119 John Lee Johnson Way Fourth Street, between University Avenue and Bradley Avenue 5/16/2006 Council Member Giraldo Rosales requested the designation to acknowledge the contribution Mr. Johnson made to the community.
2006-220 Billy Morrow Jackson Way White Street, between Prospect Avenue and New Street 8/15/2006 Council Member Tom Bruno made the request for an honorary street name for Billy Morrow Jackson to acknowledge the artistic contribution Mr. Jackson made to the community.
2006-255 Jack McDuff Way East Beardsley Avenue – between Fourth Street and the City’s eastern City limits 9/15/2006 Council Member Marci Dodds requested this designation to acknowledge the contribution Mr. McDuff – a Champaign native – made to the worldwide jazz community.
2006-268 Loren Tate Way Fremont Street, between Main Street and Washington Street 9/26/2006 The News-Gazette made a request to designate this area of Fremont Street as an honorary street for Loren Tate.
2007-078 Tim Nugent Way Stadium Drive from Neil Street to First Street 4/3/2007 City received a request to recognize a leader in the field of disability rehabilitation and education.
2007-128 Honorary Keith Page Drive Country Fair Drive from Springfield Avenue to University Avenue 4/3/2007 Scott Andresen requested designation to honor Mr. Page’s 41 years as a WICD television weatherman and for teaching drama in the Champaign School District for over 20 years.
2007-129 Honorary Kenneth Kesler Way Park Court 6/5/2007 City received a request for designation to recognize Mr. Kesler’s service on the Champaign County Soil and Water Conservation District Board for over 40 years.
2007-177 Honorary Austin Cloyd Way State Street from Hill Street to Park Street 7/10/2007 City received a request for designation to honor Austin Cloyd, a selfless, young individual, who volunteered for Empty Tomb, Inc., was an active member of the youth group at First United Methodist Church and was killed in the Virginia Tech Shootings.
Allen Rivers, Sr., Street Park Street from Wright Street to Fourth Street 5/26/2009 Mr. Rivers served on the Champaign Police Department for 25 years. He was a patrolman from 1935 to 1958. In May 1958, Mr. Rivers was promoted to sergeant and served in that capacity until his retirement on August 1, 1960. He was the first African American to serve as a Police Officer in Champaign and at the time of his death, November 12, 1989, was the only African American to achieve the rank of Sergeant.
Joe Somers St. Fifth Street from Grove Street to Bradley Avenue 9/24/2009 Mr. Somers was a City of Champaign Justice of the Peace and Republican precinct committeeman for northeast Champaign. He was elected Champaign County Justice of the Peace for the Champaign District in 1961, which made him the first African American elected official in Champaign County.
