Champaign Fire Department, Building Safety is responsible for ensuring the enforcement of City codes relating to building construction. Responsibilities include receipt of all permit applications, review for compliance with codes, and inspection of all construction including building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, sprinkler and fire alarm systems. Services are provided in accordance with goals established by the Development Services Task Force.
Permits are required whenever an owner or authorized agent intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to install, enlarge, alter, repair, or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing, sprinkler or fire alarm system. Work exempt from permits includes roofing, if no roof sheathing replacement (IL roofing license is required for contractors), yard barns not exceeding 120 square feet and fences, (Zoning regulations do apply), playground equipment, and minor repair work to electrical, mechanical or plumbing systems.
