Fire Investigations

The Champaign Fire Department Fire Investigations Unit was established to comply with an Illinois State Fire Marshal’s mandate to determine origin and cause of fires occurring within the City of Champaign.

The Fire Investigations Unit is made up of the Deputy Fire Marshal in charge of investigations and six suppression personnel trained as investigators.  All fire investigators are certified through the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s 120 hour Fire Investigations Course.    To maintain certification all investigators attend monthly training.

If a fire is determined to be arson, members of the Fire Investigations Unit work directly with the Champaign Police Department to follow through with prosecution.
