City of Champaign Fire Explorer Scholarship
Background
The City of Champaign understands that preparing oneself for a career in fire/emergency services requires not only a commitment to community service, but a financial commitment as well. To that end, the City of Champaign is proud to assist an outstanding Explorer in pursuing his or her fire/emergency career aspirations.
The Award
The scholarship will be awarded in an amount up to $1,625 per semester (Fall and Spring), payable to Parkland College for tuition only. The award recipient is expected to maintain a GPA of 2.75 or above per semester. Award recipient selections to be made are in the sole discretion of the City of Champaign.
Who is Eligible
Any active Champaign Fire Explorer Program member who has met the minimum objectives of the program is eligible to apply. Other criteria are:
- The applicant must be a high school senior or graduate.
- The applicant must attend Parkland College and enroll in the Fire Service Technology, A.S.S program.
Application Process
Candidates should submit a completed application as well as the following:
- Official high school transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation from each of the following (no relatives): an Explorer Post advisor, a high school representative, a community representative
- Letter of acceptance from Parkland College
- A 500-word essay on “Why I’ve chosen the fire service as a career path.”
