The Legal Department acts as the legal advisor to the City of Champaign in matters involving municipal operations and administrative matters. To that end, the mission of the Legal Department is to provide the highest quality legal counsel to the City Council, City Manager, boards and commissions, departments, and all City officials in matters relating to their official duties. In addition, the Legal Department reviews and approves all legal documents and prosecutes and defends all suits against, for, and on behalf of the City of Champaign and its agencies.

The City Attorney and each Assistant City Attorney work directly with City departments and officials as assigned. Each attorney has expertise in specific subject matters; however, each attorney responds to any City legal matter as needed. Two legal secretaries are assigned to work with two attorneys, as well as carry out administrative assignments. A legal secretary coordinates the City’s ordinance prosecution system. A paralegal assists with the City’s ordinance prosecution and with other civil litigation in addition to assisting all of the attorneys with legal research.
