Welcome to the Bike Champaign website! This website houses all of the information on the City of Champaign’s bicycle planning efforts. With the adoption of the 2008 Transportation Master Plan “Champaign Moving Forward” the City of Champaign has been dedicated to becoming more “bicycle friendly.” Since adoption of the plan, several bicycle infrastructure projects have been completed including bicycle lanes on First Street, State Street, Randolph Street and Logan/White Street. The links below provide more information about bicycle planning efforts in the City and the community in general.
The City’s Transportation Master Plan, called Champaign Moving Forward, identifies specific strategies for the City becoming more “bicycle friendly”. Included is a map detailing where future bicycle lanes are proposed.
Champaign-Urbana Bicycle Map (front and back).
This map was produced collaboratively by ChampaignCountyBikes.org and the League of Illinois Bicyclists with input from the Cities of Urbana and Champaign and the University of Illinois. The map identifies off-road trails and suggests on-road routes for bicycle travel throughout the Champaign-Urbana area.
C-U Sharing the Road Video
In 2010 the cities of Champaign and Urbana worked together to produce a bicycle education video to introduce the public to the bicycle infrastructure that is being installed around both cities. In addition the video teaches motorists and bicyclists how to interact with each other on the road.
This 14 minute video, entitled C-U Sharing the Road was filmed on local C-U streets featuring many local C-U bicyclists.
Topics covered in the program include:
- Rules of the Road – ride with traffic, stop at stop signs,be predictable
- Bicycling Infrastructure – bike lanes, shared lane markings
- Bike/Bus Interaction – pass bus on left, pass with at least 3 feet
- Sidewalk/Shared -use-path Riding – no bikes on downtown sidewalks
