Property maintenance
The Property Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance and preservation of existing structures in the community through enforcement of property maintenance codes and coordination of efforts to achieve compliance with the City’s blight and nuisance abatement programs.
Right of ways
A right-of-way is a strip of land acquired by reservation, forced dedication, or condemnation. It is intended for traffic movement, utilities, and similar public uses such as roads, clear zones for traffic safety, sidewalks and pathways for pedestrian safety, utility services above, at, and below ground, and for snow storage. A right-of-way generally extends 25 to 30 feet from the centerline of the road onto the lawn area.

Storm Sewers & Flooding
(Drainage Responsibilities) Ownership and responsibility for maintenance of ditches, storm sewers, detention ponds, and streams in the City varies. The following summary provides a simplified view of this complex situation.
Street Sweeping
The Street Section of Public Works is responsible for the sweeping of all City streets that have curb and gutter lines. This is done on a routine basis year-round, as weather permits. The streets are swept by section, and on an average of at least twice a month.
Trees
The City’s Forestry Section is responsible for the planting, pruning and removal of all trees on City rights-of-way. The Forestry Section also conducts periodic public information workshops to inform citizens of tree-related care, needs and issues.
Yard Waste Collection
The City of Champaign sponsors two seasonal yard waste collections and a Christmas tree collection for all residential properties in the City. The fall yard waste collection provides residents with four collection opportunities, while the spring yard waste collection provides two collection opportunities.
