To expedite the traffic flow into, around and away from the event site (Dodds Parks), the public safety committee announces the following traffic plan for the evening show and fireworks:
Prior to the launch of the fireworks:
- All entrances to Parkland College and Dodds Park will be open.
- Vehicles entering via Parkland Way from Mattis Ave may use parking lots at the Park Districts Sports Complexes and may also be directed to Parkland College lots M5-6.
- Vehicles entering the main entrance off Bradley Avenue will be directed to parking lots B1-7.
- Vehicles entering via Duncan will be directed to Parkland College lots M1 or C1-4.
- Parkland Lots M2-4 are closed for construction.
- Soccer field parking lots are restricted to vehicles displaying handicapped placards or plates and vehicles issued official passes.
Traffic on Bradley Avenue will be restricted to one way traffic (west bound) between Country Fair Drive and Clayton Blvd beginning at 6:00 PM and ending at 9:00 PM.
Bradley Avenue between Clayton Blvd and Duncan Rd will be closed to all traffic beginning at 6:00 PM and ending at 11:00 PM.
No parking will be allowed on Duncan Road north of Bradley Avenue.
No parking will be allowed on the grass or in unmarked spaces of Parkland College or Park District Property. Violators will be subject to ticket and/or tow.
No RV’s or oversized vehicles will be allowed to park in the parking lots of Parkland College or the Champaign Park District. These vehicles will be directed Illinois workNet Center on Mattis Avenue.
Some residential neighborhoods will have additional parking restrictions to allow for emergency vehicle access. The main streets through these residential neighborhoods will be posted for no parking on one side of the street. Vehicles parked in these posted areas are subject to ticketing and towing.
Residents of Parkland Ridge are asked to use the entrances off Duncan Ave to relieve traffic congestion in the area of Bradley Ave and Clayton Blvd.
Parkland Ct will be closed and only those vehicles associated to businesses in the area will be allowed.
During the fireworks:
Bradley Avenue will be closed to all traffic between Country Fair Drive and Clayton Blvd. This closure is expected to take place at 9:00 PM and last for approximately 40 minutes.
Following the event:
Vehicles exiting the parking lots will be routed through the same entrances in which they entered. (See above.) Upon exiting, the traffic pattern will be as follows:
- Parkland Way / Mattis Ave exit. All vehicles will be directed to the north. Both lanes open to east bound traffic.
- Illinois workNet Center lot. All vehicles will be directed to the south.
- Vehicles exiting the Parkland College Main entrance on Bradley Avenue will be directed to the east. Bradley Avenue will be one way (east bound) between Clayton Blvd and Mattis Avenue. Initially, Country Fair Drive south of Bradley Avenue will be closed to allow for business parking lots in the area to clear.
- Traffic at Bradley Avenue and Mattis Avenue will be directed to the east and south only.
- Duncan Road entrance. All traffic will be directed to the south and west. Both lanes will be open to south bound traffic north of Bradley and traffic in the right lane will be required to turn right.
- Mattis Avenue will be closed to north bound traffic between Bradley Avenue and Parkland Way (Mattis Avenue entrance). This will allow for pedestrian crossing.
- All vehicles exiting from Clayton Blvd and Edward Hoffman Dr at their intersections with Duncan Road will be directed south.
- Officers will be directing traffic at each of these intersections immediately following the event and until the majority of the traffic has cleared the area. Additional officers will be assigned to outlining intersections.
- Pedestrians exiting at the main entrance to the college will cross on the west and south sides of the intersection.
An event map that outlines the traffic pattern and plan for this event is attached to this press release and is also available at our website www.july4th.net.
In addition to officers assigned traffic posts, additional officers will be assigned to patrol streets and highways in the area to discourage vehicles from creating traffic hazards by parking on the shoulder of the road.
In addition to the above traffic plan, officers assigned to the event will be enforcing other regulations as required by the Champaign Park District and Parkland College. Regulations of specific concern are as follows:
- Neither the Champaign Park District nor Parkland College allows alcohol consumption on their property.
- For the safety of everyone, fireworks of any type are prohibited at this event.
- Pets are not allowed at this event. Pet owners will be requested to remove the pet from the event site.
Officers will be assigned throughout the event site to insure the safety of all present. Motorists are reminded that there may be larger numbers of pedestrians in the area and they should use due care and caution.
The public is reminded that if during this event you have an emergency or need assistance go to the nearest police officer, medical station or call 911.
They are also reminded that the Freedom Celebration Committee has expanded live entertainment following the fireworks and all vendors will be open for an additional hour to help relieve traffic congestion in the area.
