A Bristol Park Neighborhood Steering Committee was formed in December 20, 2011 from neighborhood stakeholders. Members on the Steering Committee include neighborhood church leaders, neighborhood businesses and non profits, Human Kinetics, Park District, U of I College of Law, Housing Authority, Tenant Union, and neighborhood residents. Champaign Police Officer Jonathan Westfield is spending the week at Lincoln’s Challenge Academy conducting anti-bullying presentations. Officer Westfield will have met with approximately 500 youth from February 27th – March 1st. Presentations are conducted bi-annually at the academy. Several community members, including Champaign’s School Resource Officer Jonathan Westfield, participated in the annual African-American Read-In at Yankee Ride Elementary School. In honor of Black History Month, a group of community leaders were invited to read books to students and stress the importance of reading.  

During a normal winter season construction activity would begin at the end of March, but due to the unseasonably warm weather, O’Neil Brothers began construction on February 13, 2012. Earlier this month the Illinois Department of Transportation announced the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Federal grant recipients for the 2011 Funding Cycle. Among the recipients were two projects submitted by the City back in December 2010 as identified in the SRTS Plan for Stratton School.
