Champaign County Aerial Photos Make it to Google

The 2008 aerial photographs acquired for the community through the Champaign County GIS Consortium (CCGISC) have finally made it on to Google Maps and Google Earth websites. This has been a goal of the community for some time. At the directive of the CCGISC Policy Committee, an agreement between Google and the CCGISC was crafted last summer and edited several times to meet the requirements of legal teams at both Google and CCGISC member communities. After an agreement was finalized and approved by all parties, the digital photos were provided to Google’s California offices in December of 2008 and have now been through Google’s photo approval process. The 2008 CCGISC aerial photos are high resolution images with 6″ ground pixel size while the former images available for viewing in the Champaign Urbana area were of very poor resolution. Samples of both old and new images from Google are included below. These images are now viewable to the world at both Google Maps and Google Earth. (a link to Google Maps is included below – Google Earth requires downloading software from Google, link to download provided below).
