Pay Station Installation in Parking Lot J

Beginning Monday, March 31, weather permitting, a technician will begin installing two pay stations in City Parking Lot J, located at Sixth and Green Streets. During the installation, signage will be upgraded as well. Installation is expected to take the better part of the week and it may be necessary to barricade some portions of the lot for periods of time during the installation.

As you may have noticed, preparatory work has been taking place for some time. Fiber optic cables and internet service have been installed, spaces have been numbered, and concrete pads have been positioned for mounting the pay stations. This preparatory work will facilitate a smoother installation.

The new machines will operate in a “pay-by-space” mode, similar to the system used in City Parking Lot G, near the Intermodal Transportation Center Downtown. When the vehicle operator parks their car and exits, they will look behind the vehicle and note the space number. The customer will then proceed to one of two pay stations, which will be well signed, to pay the fee. They will insert payment (i.e. cash, coin, credit/debit card) for the amount of time they plan to stay, and enter their space number. Once this is done, the customer will receive a receipt as proof of payment. (The rate for parking in Lot J is $.75 per hour for the first two hours and $1.50 per hour thereafter.)

To ease the transition, one or more Parking Enforcement Officers will be assigned to the Lot to assist customers and answer questions about the new system during regular business hours. Additionally, some Officers will also work evening and Saturday hours to provide assistance. The length of time that this assistance is provided will be based upon customer response to the new system.

Testing for compliance with specifications will take place within the first 30 days, and until the system is accepted, the City is not required to make payment other than for the shelters, which cost approximately $8,000 of the $59,000 total.
