Bicycle Registrations
The Champaign Fire Department provides citizens the opportunity to register bicycles free of cost at all fire stations from 0800 to 2000 hours seven days a week. Fire Department personnel record such information as make/model, serial number and owner information for each bike. A numbered decal is then placed on each bike. Information from the registration forms are later entered into a database at the main fire station.
Should a citizen’s bike become lost or stolen, they can call the fire department, give CFD the decal number and retrieve information necessary to file a police report. The police department checks all recovered bikes for a CFD decal. If one is located, they can call the fire department to get owner information and return the bike.
Bike Routes
The Public Works Department installs and maintains bike routes on City streets. Bike routes may be on-street and designated with signage, or may be separated from the road. Champaign’s bike routes tie into University of Illinois, Urbana, and Savoy bike routes and Champaign Park District trails. Maps of the bike route system are available at the City of Champaign information desk, 102 North Neil Street, Champaign, Illinois.
The Illinois Department of Transportation publishes maps of recommended bicycle routes, bike trails, and points of interest for each district of the state.
Maps and other local bike route information can be found on the Champaign County Greenways and Trails web site.
Bicycle Transportation: Buses operated by the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD – the local bus service) have bicycle carriers, and some Amtrak trains can accommodate carry-on bicycles. See the CUMTD Walk and Bike page for more details.
